JUDGE - BRIG GEN NICO DU PREEZ (BELLATORS)

I would like to thank the Club for inviting me to judge this show, and a special thanks to all the exhibitors for giving me such good and high quality entry to go over. This show must be one of the highlights on the annual Bull Terrier Show calendar, as it is very well organized and has that special dimension to it for being an evening show with the lights in the gazebos and a very different experience to judge dogs at night under artificial lighting. I must say most of the placements were thought provoking and some were so close as to go easily another way on a different day. There were a couple decisions, which were very close, and the conditioning and presentation or the absence thereof in some cases impacted me. Nevertheless, I enjoyed myself thoroughly.

BEST IN SHOW
No 8 : CH CARRADICE FREE SPIRIT
(Ch Carradice Flying Bullet x Carradice Lavender Mist of Neol)

Impressive medium sized white dog with tri-coloured head markings. He has a very shapely short-coupled body with a nice neck that flows well into his correct, short and solid top-line, with good and solid spring of rib. Overall he is an impressive specimen. One of his great strengths is his powerful head that is well filled with good length and depth with a nice gentle arch and good finish on the nose drop. His ears are tidy and placed on top of his head enhancing his good expression. Nice eye, well set and correctly placed. He has a correct scissors bite. His head is a virtue to cherish and one not seen often enough – He was also awarded Best Head. He has clean straight forelegs that carry enough bone for his size, but he turns out a bit at the feet and he is a bit loose in the elbow that is also evident on the move. His hindquarters are ok, but he can do with more bend of stifle, to be critical. He has good overall muscle tone and was in excellent show condition with a lovely show presence. On the move he has good drive from behind but a bit loose in front. Handled very well by his owner on the day and tipped the scales in his favour by showing himself off on his toes and alert throughout.

RESERVE BEST IN SHOW
No 9 : CH BUKAVI DIESEL N DUST

(Ch Bukavi Big Billy x Ch Idwala Radiant Ruby of Bukavi)

A very well known white dog that captures the eye immediately. A bigger more powerful built dog than his rival with good strong bone and substance. His head is strong, well filled, deep and smoothly turned. He has a correct scissors bite, but has an impacted canine to his detriment and has a blemish on his left ear that spoils his overall expression with to much of a butterfly nose, that although superficial, has to be taken into account at this level of competition. He is a stallion of a dog that is upstanding with very pleasing lines with good overall make and shape. Although he has a straight clean front standing he also has a loose elbow that is evident on the move. He has a nice deep brisket with a lovely strong rock solid top-line and is well let down at the quarters with good strong bend in stifle and compact feet. He could have a tighter skin. Overall he has a lovely neck and his outline and proportions makes him a difficult dog to ignore. On the move he was a bit loose in the front but adequate in the rear with enough drive viewed from the side. He slacked a bit in the end but was nevertheless a worthy contender. It was far from an easy decision as both he and the BIS winner are certainly worthy of the honour. I look forward to following their contributions as stud dogs.

CC DOG
No 15 : WESTBULL AUSSIE BOY OF FRANJAN (IMP AUSTRALIA)
(Ch Westbull Ezzie x Westbull Cerise)

This was the first time I have seen this dog in the ring, and was quite taken by him. A fourteen-month-old white youngster with correct shape, balance and outline. Good bodylines with all the pieces flowing together in harmony. He has ample solid bone and substance for his age with a nice deep chest, with a super neck, flowing nicely into his balanced body and solid top-line. He has a good bend in stifle and short well let down hocks with ample muscling in the hindquarters and good compact tight feet. His head is masculine with good fill under the eye, long strong and deep albeit lacking some drama in profile, but has the smallest, well set eyes and well placed ears on top of his head that gives him a wicked keen expression that is so lacking in our breed today. He has a perfect scissors bite with big strong teeth and a square underjaw. He is keen show dog that pulls himself up on his toes showing off his wonderful expression and overall style. Although still a relatively young dog he moved with authority and drive and was in tiptop show condition and well handled. A young dog with time on his side to further improve even more on his virtues. A worthy winner of the CC amongst some very tough competition.

CC BITCH
No 61 : PIKETBERG HARRY’S SNOOZY OF NIROUX

(Piketberg Harry’s Smith x Piketberg Franco’s Floozy)

I saw this bitch for the first time at the Major Trophy Show in February of this year where she impressed me immensely. A white bitch with brindle ear patch of great overall quality! Her overall lines, shapeliness, correct construction and quality easily won her the CC amongst the bitches, with some to spare. This bitch has a very good head with excellent depth, width and fill. She has a perfect and correct scissors bite with a pleasing profile and good well-placed eye. She has excellent expression and good ear set. She has good length of neck and withers development and a compact short body with really outstanding substance, power and bone for size and frame, yet remaining feminine in overall appearance. She has a beautiful straight front and a good pronounced forechest. She has a lovely tuck-up that finishes her off very nicely viewed from the side. Good front and the rear angulation that are in excellent balance. Strong short top-line but with the tail set on a bit to high. Strong developed thighs and short hocks with ample bend in stifle and tight compact feet. She moved true and straight in the front but a little close behind, however she had good drive from the side. To be hyper critical, she could be a bit taller on the leg. Nevertheless, superbly handled by her owner and in lovely show condition she was an absolute banker amongst the bitches. I really wished there was another award like Best of Opposite Sex, as I really found it difficult to not give her a greater award.

BEST PUPPY IN SHOW
NO 11 : BUKAVI HUYE
(Ch Bukavi Big Billy x Bukavi Fire Girl)

Striking young 11-month-old handsome white puppy dog with a powerful headpiece, very good profile and well-filled, good depth and with a correct scissors bite. Lovely eye and small ears placed well on top of the head giving him a lovely expression. He is a quality boy with good bone for his age and his substance is coming along just fine. He has a nice straight front and good compact feet. On the down side, I would have liked to see a bit better angulation of the front assembly as he is a bit straight in the upper arm. Nevertheless he has a sound top-line and well developed thighs for his age. His movement is a bit loose in the front and should tighten with age and maturity but his hind movement is good with enough drive. He was in good hard show condition, rarely seen in puppies that normally are shown a bit overweight. He was somewhat erratic on the day and his handler had a difficult time, but later calmed down and showed very well. A lovely puppy that should have a good show career as a mature dog.

I must however mention another outstanding puppy and winner of the Minor Puppy Dog class that really caught my eye, No 14 : Rimich The Undisputed (Ch Bukavi Diesel N Dust x Nexcon Eskie of Rimich). This very typey upstanding youngster is of the top notch and will undoubtedly develop into a classy show dog as he has all the potential and makings to really become something special. He was very unlucky to have competed against the winner on the day, which was just that little bit more mature and experienced.
