2007 MAJOR TROPHY SHOW JUDGES REPORT -
Mr
J Schiller [Centuria]

First off I would like to congratulate the MTS organizing committee on putting together once again a world class show. To the Chairman of the SABTC and his is committee a big “WELL DONE”, the show was run to perfection with the ring well laid out and beautifully adorned. I must at the same time also thank the sponsor, Eukanuba and Mrs de Coning, for without their support this prestigious event would not be the same. As far as the after-show events are concerned, I really appreciated the clubs gift and had a really good time at the party which was excellent, the music was good and the food scrumptious, and again and well done guys, Bull Terriers need this type of dedicated enthusiasm.

I have where possible tried to comment positively and believe that my judging style rewards virtue before penalizing faults and my report should be taken in this light.

Judges:
A – Myself, Joe Schiller         B – Wynand Lourens C – Louw Brits

BEST IMPORTED DOG:  Judges : A & B

In this class two dogs caught my eye Meakers, Barradur Prince at Kilacabar and Jones’s Ch Bullyview Leading Role to Navada.

Winner – No.3 Ch Bullyview Leading Role to Navada a heavyweight Brindle and White with a deep, broad chest, this dog had sufficient bone and spring of rib as well as a filled head showing good expression. Mouth level pincer bite, canines correct. He has a level top-line and well set tail but is a bit long in the back, on the move was square in both directions and from the side had good drive, to be very critical I would like to see more light under the dog and I did not like his feet but a good Bull Terrier nevertheless. I also liked No.1 Barradur Prince at Kilacabar, another Brindle and White with a cracker of a head, egg shaped with plenty of power and smoothness with a small mouth fault. He did not leave me with the impression of power as the winner did, but a worthy contender nevertheless.

Unanimous decision with Mr. Lourens

ORMANDY JUG - DOGS UNDER TWO YEARS:  Judges : A & C

Winner – No. 5 Ipon The Rock a Black Brindle and White. A tall upstanding youngster whose long head has a beautifully curved profile, plenty of fill and power with a strong under-jaw, correct mouth, and his long neck flowed into a level top-line complimented by his horizontal tail set. He also has a deep chest and good spring of rib; close coupled and well bent stifles, moved well in front but loose behind overall a quality picture that I am looking forward to see mature. Another dog worth mentioning in this class was Nicholsons Natuli Paramount a lovely upstanding elegant white; the winner had a better head and deep chest that I favored though.

Unanimous decision with Mr.Brits.

ORMANDY JUG - DOGS OVER TWO YEARS:   Judges : B & C

I did not judge the class but would dearly have loved to, as two dogs caught my eye from the side of the ring, namely, No.10 Mattheys’ Ch Bukavi Diesel ‘n Dust and No.19 du Plessis Ch Panomar Klaas Oxsan a pity these two were eliminated so early on.

Unanimous decision Mr Lourens and Brits to No. 17 Jones’s Ch Navada Eye Bandit.

COLOURED DOGS:  Judges : A & B

My choice in this class was for du Plessis Ch Panomar Klaas Oxsan a big, powerful red with a great depth of chest, deep and broad brisket, good layback of shoulder, close coupled and moved well coming but a little close behind, his head was smooth and powerful with good fill (even if slightly lippy) and a strong under-jaw, not a great profile but more than adequate power with well placed prick ears and great expression with a perfect scissors bite. Although he was a little loose in the elbow he had well bent stifles and a horizontal tail set with compact cat-like feet which presented a picture of quality. I chose him above his main rival Jones’s Ch Bullyview Leading Role to Navada because of his better layback of shoulder, shorter back and overall type, power and substance.

Split decision, Referee Mr. Brits’ choice Winner – No. 3 Jones’s Ch Bullyview Leading Role to Navada.

IMPORTED BITCHES:

None present .

ORMANDY VASE - BITCHES UNDER 2 YEARS:  Judges : B & C
Winner – unanimous decision, No 30 van der Merwe’s Rhihnestone Rumour Has It of Malycwa.

ORMANDY JUG - BITCHES UNDER 2 YEARS:  Judges : A & B

In this class I chose No. 35, Coetzee’s Ch Dajamani Dancing Carla, a heavyweight upstanding bitch that has a beautiful head filled and smooth with a correct mouth, she has plenty of substance and bone with good spring of rib, a short back, correct tail set and well bent stifles. Unfortunately her movement was not her forte’ as she was close behind but adequate in front and still had plenty of drive, preferred her due to her better substance and size.

Split decision, Referee Mr. Brits’ choice Winner – No. 42 Schoeman’s Ch Stelron Iron Lady at Combolcias.

COLOURED BITCH - RHINESTONE SHIELD:  Judges : A & C
Winner – No 42 Schoeman's Ch Stelron Iron Lady of Combolcias by unanimous decision. A tri-colour with a beautiful curved head, smooth and free of indentations, prick ears and varminty expression, slight mouth fault, although I prefer a broader muzzle she is a quality animal, upstanding with a deep chest and adequate bone, a long elegant neck, close coupled and a level top-line. I would like to have seen a better bend of stifle and her tail-set was a little high, nevertheless she was streets ahead of her competitors with a head like that.

BEST IMPORTED BULL TERRIER:

Winner – No 3 by default as no imported bitches were present.

BEST COLOURED BULL TERRIER - BRILOWS TROPHY:  Judges : A & B
Winner – No 3 Ch Bullyview Leading Role to Navada I preferred him to the bitch as his overall substance, size and ring presence dominated.

BEST MOVER - TOM HORNER TARTARY TROPHY:  Judges : A & C

Winner – No.16 Ruppings Ch Narciano Samuel a white dog that I also liked, he was a true mover in all respects with great length of stride and powerful drive in the rear reaching well in front, from the side it was a flowing picture with his top-line level, from the front and rear he was parallel and wide.

A unanimous decision with Mr. Brits.

BEST HEAD - MONTESANO TROPHY:
Winner – No 3 Ch Bullyview Leading Role to Navada.

SABTC - DOG OF THE YEAR:  Judges : A & B

My choice in this class was for the colored dog No. 3 Jones’s Ch Bullyview Leading Role to Navada who I preferred due to his presence, a more powerful dog as I mention earlier with good spring of rib, substance and bone, also moved better with a better front and head.

Split decision, Referee Mr Brits choice Winner – No. 17 Jones’s Ch Navada Eye Bandit.

SABTC - BITCH OF THE YEAR:  Judges : A & B
Winner –  No 30 van der Merwe’s Ch Rhinestone Rumour Has It of Malycwa a beautiful feminine yet substantial bitch with a lovely head, filled and smooth, her broader muzzle, correct mouth and better substance gave her the win, neither of the bitches were outstanding movers but both were good examples of how a Bull Terrier should look packed with type and quality.

A unanimous decision with Mr Brits.

SA SUPREME BULL TERRIER OF 2007

I chose the bitch Ch Rhinestone Rumour Has It of Malycwa and felt that she was a better bitch than Eye Bandit was a dog, with more substance and type, better front and head quality, overall carrying more balance and style on top of her being in top show condition.

Winner No. 17 Jones’s Ch Navada Eye Bandit.

In Closing

In all I found all male dogs to be entire with two fully descended testicles and there were no reasons to penalize or disqualify any exhibit due to health or other reasons.

As a general comment I was impressed with most of the dogs exhibited and believe that we have some of the best animals on the planet but was quite shocked at the quality of some of the exhibits, after all this is the showcase of Bull Terriers in South Africa and inferior specimens of the breed should not even qualify, it leaves me doubting the quality of judging in South Africa as on each CC or Challenge Certificate the judge has to sign and state that “I am clearly of the opinion that this exhibit is of such outstanding merit as to be worthy of qualifying for the title of Champion”. Lack of virtue and type as well as glaring faults were so visibly evident that if this were the only or best exhibit for me to judge I would withhold the CC, perhaps if judges of our breed had the gumption to apply this model it would raise standards and resolve our problems with “cheap champions” by sending a message to other judges that they need to improve their knowledge of our breed and judge honestly according to the breed standard for Bull Terriers.
