JUDGE
- DR FRANNE BEREZ (Action Bull Terriers - USA)
I
would like to thank the SABTC for the invitation to judge their annual
Championship show. I was
greeted by a pleasing entry and the warmest hospitality.
The weather and venue were beautiful.
Later we were treated to a delicious catered sit down dinner where
I had the opportunity to meet many of the exhibitors and learn more about
their dogs. I have traveled all over the world and feel that the
hospitality I received in
South Africa
was second to none.
DOGS
Minor Puppy -
1st
- #22 : Louwrens’ Carradice Free Spirit (Ch Carradice Flying
Bullet x Carradice Lavender Mist of Neon). Flashy young white carrying
large tri-colour eye patch caught my eye immediately, teeming with
quality. A pleasure to have as my first exhibit.
His head is long and turned with a perfect mouth; lovely fill and I
kept him in for the best head challenge. He has beautiful round bone down
to his pasterns that are puppyish and loose at this stage. He has a well
developed body with loads of substance. He has a nice top line with
properly set on tail that he carries well on the move. Stifle is muscled
and could be a little more turned. Full of spirit, playful and truly
enjoying his first day out, he gave his handler a challenge on the move.
A most promising puppy whose career I will follow with interest.
2nd
- #32 Ruppings’ Narciano
Samuel (Ch
Kingstonia Unique Trouble x Narciano Katrina). Another handsome typey young medium sized male
with good bone and substance. His smooth down face is set off with red ear
and well-placed eyes, and nice fill. Mouth correct. Ears are used well,
although set back a little. He has less reach of neck than the winner as
shoulder is a tad upright but he moves nicely around the ring with good
reach and drive, maintaining his top line well.
Puppy -
1st - #44 : Vermeulen's Bounty
Hunter (Ch Nexcon’s white as
Night x Waaiplaas Lady Lulu at Nexcon). Stylish
young white male with round bone to match medium frame and athletic build.
White head with no markings is long with good fill and ears on top of
head. Mouth correct. Moves
well behind and close coming towards. Nice top line and tail set, although
would like a tad less length of back.

- #25 : Mattheys’ Bukavi Titan (Ch Bukavi Big Billy x Alchasun
Spanish Echo of Jococla) - Ultra typey medium size squarely built dog with
a big packed headpiece, well turned with good depth of muzzle He caught my
eye while standing in front of him with his straight front, nicely let
down fore chest, varminty expression and alert perky ears. Mouth correct.
His lovely round bone continues all the way
to his short toes. Viewed from the side, he has good reach of neck,
adequate layback of shoulder, strong top line and proper tail set. He is
well muscled in the rear although moved a little close going away and ok
coming towards. A handsome
young man. With a change of
handlers, he really stood out in the final lineup and I awarded him the
CC.
2nd
- #45 : Vermeulens’ Nexcon Son of a Gun (Trick or Treat Usher the
Raven at Calub x Nexcon Lets Go Girl). Solid white beautifully headed
bullish type young dog. From the front, I loved his head with its wicked
tiny deeply set eye and oodles of pack and muzzle power.
Smoothly turned from the side, but alas his mouth was slightly off.
He had a good fore chest with a shortish neck, good top line standing and
well let down rear.
3rd
- #8 : Du Plessis’ Dalin King
Elrond (Ch Kingstonia Unique Trouble x Highlawn Abigail at Dalin).
Perhaps the soundest of this class and a completely different type from
the other boys. This
well balanced upstanding quality young dog barely one year of age, has a
long well turned head with good fill, but his eye is not as keen as the
prior although it is a good eye. He has lovely reach of neck and good top
line with the required very slight rise over the loin and is shapely from
the side. This big boy covers ground nicely when he moves and should
mature to a top-notch dog.

- #5 : Buys’ Wistler Macula (Trick or Treat Usher The Raven x
Bonisio Gucci of Bacalaureus). Upstanding black brindle, standing alone in
this class. Straight profile
with good depth of muzzle, nice straight front, little feet, short back.
Could use more bend of stifle.

- #46 : Vermeulen’s Ruff N Ready at Nexcon (Trick or Treat Usher
The Raven at Calub x Riska). Shapely, upstanding medium sized white with
brindle ears. His head is long and well turned with catchy expression and
good depth of muzzle. Viewed
from the front he could use a little more muzzle power and overall width
that might come with maturity. He
has proper bone for his size. Movement is very good in the front and a
little close going away. Overall, a very handsome bully.
2nd
- #2 : Bellingan’s Nexcon Spiff and Spirit (Ch Dajan Soulmate’s
with Sandawana x Ch Brilows Barbie Roni of Nexcon). Opposite type from my
number one dog, black brindle bullish type with a fat head and wonderful
expression, profile with a minute break but good depth of muzzle. He has a
really straight front and top line and moves well.

-
1st
- #26 : Mattheys’ Bukavi Makin Waves - Large boned upstanding
brindle dog that covers the ground with ease, maintaining his top line all
the while. His head is gently turned with a correct bite.
I would like a darker eye set higher up and just a bit more
strength of muzzle. He has a
well-placed shoulder with a good forechest and top line.
Back is a little long. Front
is straight and he moves it well. He was later awarded the RCC and Best
Mover.
2nd
- #49 : Vorster’s Rostel Roscarla - Heavy boned white carrying
black ears, which exude type. His
head is gently turned with correct bite and good depth of muzzle and who
is also strong from the front, but his expression detracts.
His shoulder is not as correct as my winner.
3rd
- # 50 : Vorster’s Rostel Koda (Ch Dajan Skies the Limit at
Sandawana x Rostel Roza). Actually
the flashiest with the best headpiece in this class, Black brindle, full
of quality but not the power of the other two.

Harrison
’s Ch Dajan Skies the Limit at Sandawana (Ch Kilicabar Fire
Starter x Ch Dajan Classy Dame) -This world-class stallion of a dog
brought a big smile to my face. He
simply out shadowed all dogs up until this class. He is a true heavyweight
white dog with black eye that maintains shapeliness, quality, and type in
spite of his size. Viewed from the front, he has a wicked expression with
dark, deeply set eyes, pack under the eyes, and good length of foreface
with good bite and well angled out canines.
His chest is fully dropped and wide with elbows tightly seated
close to his body. He maintains large round bone down to his neat feet.
From the side, his profile is long and well turned with a proper
under jaw. His shoulder is nicely laid back and he maintains his top line
perfectly on the move. Would
like a tad shorter back. He moves away with determination and drive and a
little close coming back. This dog screams stud dog to me. I was not
surprised to learn later that my top three white bitches were all sired by
him, but was amazed to learn they were littermates. He also sired my top
colored bitch.
2nd
- #30 : Olivier’s Ch Denerad Bravo (Ch Geham Melody Maker of
Brilows x Monya of Tokazani) - This lovely brindle boy was unlucky to meet
Skies the Limit today. Bravo is a medium sized shapely dog with a lovely
well turned head fully filled with wonderful expression, correct bite, and
ears set right on top of his head. He
has a long shapely neck and smooth top line with correct tail set. He does
not have the forechest nor the substance of my winner but has plenty
enough for his size .His back length also is a fraction too long. He was
shown to perfection and did not put a foot out of line.
3rd
- #28 : O’Neill’s Ch Riberts Cold Duck (Ch Brum Home of the
Breed at
Nevada
x Ch Riberts Irish Mist). Well-balanced medium sized tricolour dog with
smooth profile, nice length of head without the fill of the winners. Nice
length of neck and full forechest. Not as much bone as the winners.
BITCHES
Minor Puppy
1st
- #10 : Els’ Elru Joanie (Ch Aniro St Cristopher x Bukavi
Storming Magic of Narciano). Heavyweight white carrying red bitch that is
teeming with quality. Powerful
well-turned head, filled right to the wide muzzle. Correct bite.
Ears smack on top of her pretty head. Wonderful neck molds cleanly
into her shoulder and smooth top line Moves well going away and puppyish
loosely coming back. Feet
could be tidier.
2nd
- #35 : Roodt’s Kaleigh (Elrico Sir Edward x Chinese Dream of
Elrico). Ultratypey white bitch with two red ears almost touching on top
of her head. Smoothly turned head without quite the finish or muzzle power
of the winner. Moves better in
the front than the winner and closer behind.
She gave her handler a devilish time today.
3rd
- #47 : Vermulen’s Waaiplaas Misty Magic at Nexcon (Ruff n Ready
at Nexcon x Waaiplaas Dusty Zola). Flashy well handled black brindle
bitch. Long head is well
turned with lovely expression. Back
is longer than the other two and top line is not as strong. Lovely deep
forechest. Feet could be
tighter. Nice hefty bitch with
not quite the power in the head of the winners.
Junior

1st
- #11 : Evangelides’ Rhinestone Real Gembaby (Ch Lubjan Rock and
Stone x Ch Rhinestone Rough n Ready). This little gem is just my cup of
tea She is a well-balanced, full of quality and unexaggerated.
Head is long, strong and smoothly turned with great expression and
a wicked eye, uses her ears well. Her shoulder is well placed and back is
short. She has good tuck up and top line. Good reach with movement.
Should have a very bright future with a little more maturity.
2nd
- #31 : Olivier’s Franjan First Lady (Ch Denerad Bravo of Franjan
x Brilows Brinas Big Love of Franjan). Another topnotch white bitch
carrying black brindle with gorgeous head that is more turned than my
winner but with less muzzle power. She
has a long reachy neck but is a little slack behind the shoulder.
She moves cleanly in both directions.
3rd
- #38 : Schoeman’s Stelron Iron Lady of Combolcias (Ch Dajan’s
Skies the Limit at Sandawana x Stelron Good Vibrations). It is hard to
believe that a bitch of this caliber stands third.
This is a compact tricolour well balanced powerhouse of a bitch.
She shows herself to perfection. Her
head is curved from ears to the tip of her nose and well filled.
Her canines are correct but she has three teeth just off level.
Her strong neck merges smoothly into a correct shoulder and her
short back maintains on the move. Her
front is true and she moves accordingly.
Although she has good bone, it falls off a little just above the
feet.

- #9 : Du Preez’s Dajamani Valnico Of Bellators (Ch Dajan Skies
the Limit at Sandawana x Ch Joche Alicia). Another big smile came to my
face when this girl entered the ring. She has the same quality of her
father from the front with that well letdown turkey-breast of a chest and
round bone full of power. Her head is the classical egg shape that I so
rarely see with any hollows from any direction, set off by black head
markings. Her finish is
superb. Eyes are well placed, but to be critical I would like them a bit
smaller. She is a heavyweight with an ultra short back with a rise over
the loin. Carries her tail high with excitement although correctly when
she finally settles down to the task at hand.
Quarters are well turned and muscled and letdown. Movement is good
in front and a little close behind. This is the one I would take home in a
heartbeat.
2nd
- #6 : Coetzee’s Dajamani Dancing Carla (Ch Dajan’s Skies the
Limit at Sandawana x Ch Joche Alicia). An ultra typey solid white with
well turned head and wonderful depth of muzzle
Head a little shorter and a little less bone than the winner. She
has two teeth off level in the front. She has a chunky rear with good
second thigh. Moves okay
coming and a little close away.
3rd
- #42 : Van Den Doel’s Bellators Divine Goddess of Ipon (Ch Ipon
Nelson x Berkims Bronwen of Bellators). A shapely upstanding brindle,
beautifully presented, unlucky to run into these lovely headed bitches.
Her profile is lovely, long and turned.
From the front, her ears are well placed on top of her head, eyes
are well placed but not small enough, and she could use a little more
muzzle power for me. Beautifully constructed and moves well in both
directions.

- #48 : Vermeulen’s Cara Mia at Nexcon (Trick or Treat Usher the
Raven at Caleb x Nexcon Forever Joy). Best head in this class although not
over exaggerated. White bitch with black ears. Shapely with good forechest.
Long clean neck. She
does not maintain her top line on the move.
2nd
- #3 : Bellingnan’s Nexcon Forever Joy (Ch Bassbar Vim and Vigour
of Nexcon x Ch Brilows Barbie Roni of Nexcon). This all white typey
package has a lovely headpiece with mouth just off. She has a wicked eye
and topnotch ear placement. Back is shorter with a better top line than
the winner
3rd
- #37 : Schiller’s Centuria Dominatrix - Substantial doggy bitch
that should be an asset in the whelping box. She has a powerful wide face
with great little eyes for a colored and ears right up on top of the head.
Her forechest is well rounded and her bone is round all the way to
the ground. Front is straight. Could
use more bend of stifle with better tail carriage. Kept her for substance.

- #13 :
Harrison
’s Dajan Hi Class Dame of Sandawana (Ch Kilicabar Fire Starter x
Ch Dajan Classy Dame). Feminine substantial low-slung white bitch with
well-turned head, good expression, nice fill. Two teeth off correct. She
has a deep forechest, good bone, and top line is a little slack behind the
collar. Well letdown rear with powerful muscling.
Moves well coming and close going away. Feet could be tidier.

- #14 : Henning’s Dajamani
Dillary (Ch Dajan’s Skies the Limit at Sandawana x Ch Joche Alicia)
Ultra typey all white bitch
with cranked over headpiece with crashing finish, deepest muzzle, wicked
deep-set dark eye. She has a
straight forehand and could use a little more depth of forechest.
Shoulder a tad upright with slackness behind the collar when she
relaxes. She moves nicely.
2nd
- #1 : Alberts’ Riberts River Rose (Ch Brum Home of the Breed of
Nevada x Riberts Grabbies Ginger) medium sized copper colored red bitch of
wonderful quality that did not want to be here on this day.
Her head is glorious, well turned and finished with a lovely dark
deeply set eye. She would not use her ears today.
Has one of the best shoulders and forehand in the ring. I wish she
had made more of herself today.
3rd
- #51 : Vorster’s Rostel Lady Luck (Ch Dajan Soulmates with
Sandawana x Rostel Rossamar). Ultra shapely white bitch with nice reach of
neck. Good top line but longer
in back than the red bitch and not quite the head quality. Has a really
well turned head without the muzzle strength I look for. Movement is good.
CC
Bitch and BOB -
Dajamani Valnico of Bellators and
her father, Ch Dajan Skies the Limit at Sandawana - RBOB,
fought it out for top spot. Both are spectacular animals in their own
right. I chose the bitch in the end
because of her absolutely egg shaped head and ultra typey short back.
RCC
Bitch - Hennings Dajamani Dillary
Chosen
for her type and Headpiece.
Champions
-
1st
- #15 : Hitge’s Ch Highlawn Tabitha of Matabola
(Ch Sandawanna Tommy Hotspur of Kingstonia x Ch San Giros Bundle of
Trouble). Classically headed white bitch with well placed and carried ears
and correct bite. Nice round bone. Carrying
too much weight on the day, giving her the appearance of a stuffy neck on
the day. Still every bit the deserving champion.
2nd
- #20 : Larkin’s Ch Booksale Tamora (Ch Lubjan Rock and Stone x
Ch Booksale Belle Blonde). Ultra muscular upstanding white bitch with
great expression and width of foreface set off by varminty eye and small
ears on top of head. Not the
profile of my winner but good depth of muzzle. Shoulder a bit upright but
short backed with shapely underline. She
has a well-muscled rear that she uses well on the move.
3rd
- #6 : Bohler’s
Ch Kingstonia Full Circle
(Ch Kingstonia Advokat ‘n Trouble x Ch Kingstonia Ahead of Trouble)
Shapely brindle and white with pretty feminine headpiece without the
strength of muzzle and bone of the winners. She moves nicely in both
directions.
Best
Head - Dajamani Valnico Of Bellators
- Although not the most dramatically turned head in the class, her width,
and depth of muzzle and pack under the eyes with no hollows easily gave
her this class.
Best
Mover - This was a tough class for me.
I come from a country where the majority of the animals are well
constructed and move accordingly. The
Americans also road work their dogs daily before the top shows and I think
the extra muscle tone might have something to do with good movement. I
found both here and in
England
that many of the dogs were not in hard condition and moved sloppily. I
chose Bukavi Makin Waves for his reach and drive and flowing
movement from the side. He and
his handler moved in perfect harmony.
Best
Substance - Ch Dajan Skies The Limit at Sandawana, easily won
this award.
Best Coloured -
Stelron Iron Lady of Combolcias - Her competition was Ch Denerad
Bravo of Franjan. Both lovely headed animals, the tri-coloured bitch
finally settled down and showed me her stuff.
She is a wonderful mover and exudes type with a very short back.
