2004 MAJOR TROPHY SHOW JUDGES REPORT -
Mr D Brennan

General
I was honored to have judged the 2004 Show and honestly believe that it was the best held to date.  My complements to all the organizing committee for the VIP treatment, hospitality, food, drinks and gifts.  Special thanks to Deon Schoeman who was an excellent host and waiter.

My overall impression of the Bull Terriers is that I believe there is more depth with the bitches than the dogs.  Temperaments seem to have stabilized and movement has definitely improved.  Mouths have improved immensely and despite some exhibits with 'Inboard canines' (none offensive/destructive) all exhibits discussed below had correct bites as per the Standard.  Biggest problem currently is conformation seen by numerous poor top-lines.  Another irritant is lack of show training of the handlers.  In numerous cases the judge has to evaluate a dog constantly on the move or hiding behind the handler.  Many dogs were infested with fleas but this is a first for me while judging.

SABTC CANDLESTICKS TROPHY FOR BEST IMPORTED DOG

No 1: CH DAJAN SKIES THE LIMIT AT SANDAWANA (IMP UK)
This upstanding dog is impressive with good height, conformation, profile and angulation in the hindquarters.  Head solid but could do with more fill and width, held with god reach of neck.  At times his feet turn out at the front and when moving.  He is a stable mover and could have more bone for size and shorter back.  Nose slightly butterfly.  Otherwise this is the best imported dog from England I have seen in South Africa.  A deserved winner and looked as if he owned the ring.

No 2:  CH KLINGHILL'S BLADE RUNNER OF LUSAHN (IMP NETH)
Smaller than the overall winner this was the only other dog that could compete.  His head is superb with excellent turn, fill and deep set eye.  Where he fell away was his conformation but compared favorable on movement and overall conformation.

ORMANDY VASE FOR SA BRED UNDER TWO YEARS
I was not selected as a judge in this class but was required as a split decision resulted between No6 and No9.  This was not an easy decision as neither dog dominated the other with outstanding virtues.

No 6:  IZIGHALO RUNAROUND PETE
I selected No6 for his outstanding head, expression and movement.  Good reach of neck and layback of shoulder.  When excited he tended to carry his tail high but not over his back. He was well proportioned with good conformation, short back, excellent hindquarters and bone.  He was not as heavy as No 9 but with superior movement and head, deserved to win the class.

No 9:  NEXCON WHITE AS NIGHT AT NEXWIN
This dog was overall heavier than the winner but was lacking in hindquarters and movement.  Good head with more than adequate profile and fill.

ORMANDY JUG TROPHY FOR SA BRED DOGS OVER TWO YEARS
This was the biggest class with numerous contenders.  My final decision was a white dog that was well proportioned, good mover and great head.  My co-judge confirmed my selection.

No 16:  CH DENERAD MR ICE OF RIALZISTA
Big upstanding dog with excellent head, bone and good movement.  Short back with slight roach, good tail placement.  His head needs mention as it has good fill, width, length, depth of muzzle and down-face resulting in a great expression.  He was a bit fiery in temperament but easily controllable.

COLOURED DOGS RHEEDER TROPHY
My choice went to a red dog that exuded condition and substance.  This dog was well muscled carrying minimal fat and showed very well.  My co-judge decided on a heavy weight brindle No 11:  CH ANIRO ST CHRISTOPHER.

No 13:  CH BULLRAGE FRANCESKOW OF KLAPNEL
I found this dog to have an excellent ring presence and was in excellent condition.  He had an excellent head, expression and moved superbly in all directions.  Compared to many others he had a well defined roach with overall excellent conformation.  He ended up being Best Mover.

No 11:  CH ANIRO ST CHRISTOPHER
Personally I believed his head did not compare to my choice in profile, width and expression. He was taller on the leg and a heavier dog with acceptable movement but seemed lethargic on the day.  He has looked and shown far better in the past.

WENTWORTH TROPHY FOR IMPORTED BITCHES

No 25:  GRISSEBASSE KYKKELI KOKKOS OF LUSAHN (IMP NETH)
This was the only bitch in the class and I did not judge.

ORMANDY VASE TROPHY FOR SA BRED BITCHES UNDER TWO YEARS
This was anther large class with only one winner as both of us chose the same bitch.

No 34:  KINGSTONIA FULL CIRCLE
An outstanding feature of this bitch was her excellent head.  She has good profile, fill and depth of muzzle.  Currently bottom jaws are weak, but she had a wide and strong under-jaw.  She is not the largest bitch but has a straight front, good hind angulation with turn of stifle and second thigh.  Good top-line and movement.  I would hike to have seen more bone.  Also winner of Best Coloured Bitch.

ORMANDY JUG TROPHY FOR SA BRED BITCHES OVER TWO YEARS
Another large class with excellent depth and quality.  My decision was No 42:  CH HIGHLAWN TABITHA OF MATABOLA.  The same bitch selected by my co-judge.

A classic bitch with excellent profile, expression, width and depth of muzzle.  Good layback of shoulder, nice reach of neck.  Correct bite with broad square jaw.  She has an excellent front with good bone and well defined and angulated hindquarters.  She has a broad chest, good conformation but could have had a slightly shorter back.  Her movement was sound in all directions.

BEST IMPORTED BULL TERRIER

No 1:  CH DAJAN SKIES THE LIMIT AT SANDAWANA (IMP UK)(Harrision)
The dog was more outstanding than the bitch and as mentioned earlier the bitch showed signs of a recent litter and was not in top condition.  My co-judge was in agreement.

BRILOWS TROPHY FOR BEST COLOURED BULL TERRIER

No 11:  CH ANIRO ST CHRISTOPHER (O Prinsloo)
I preferred the bitch No 34:  KINGSTONIA FULL CIRCLE who was more balanced, better shown and in better dondition than the dog.  My co-judge decided on the dog and the split decision went to the dog No 11:  CH ANIRO ST CHRISTOPHER.

TOM HORNER TROPHY FOR BEST MOVER

I was not required up front to judge this class but my conclusion on an improvement in movement was substantiated by the number of exhibits nominated for this class.  After a difficult class two excellent movers were selected an d I was required to make the final decision.  I must commend both these exhibits on excellent movement and showmanship.  The first was a bitch No 48:  CH RHINESTONE ROUGH MAGIC OF DANNEL who moved squarely in front and back with good lateral movement.  The winner however was No 13:  CH BULLRAGE FRANCESKOW OF KLAPNEL who moved comparable to the bitch both coming and going but outclassed her in drive and power on lateral movement from strong hindquarters.

SABTC VICTRIX SHIELD FOR DOG OF THE YEAR

No 1:  CH DAJAN SKIES THE LIMIT AT SANDAWANA (IMP UK)
This was not an easy decision as both were excellent specimens.  Looking at overall virtues I preferred winner of the DOGS OVER 2 YEARS - No 16:  CH DENERAD MR ICE OF RIALZISTA for his overall balance, head and movement.  I would have been happy with either winning as little separated the two.

The split decision went to No 1 - well deserved.

SABTC VICTRIX SHIELD FOR BITCH OF THE YEAR

No 42:  CH HIGHLAWN TABITHA OF MATABOLA
I did not judge this class but agreed with the decision.

SUPREME BULL TERRIER/SABTC CHAIRMANS TROPHY FOR SOUTHERN AFRICAS SUPREME BULL TERRIER & SANDAWANA TROPHY FOR SUPREME BULL TERRIER

All three judges agreed on the dog No 1:  CH DAJAN SKIES THE LIMIT AT SANDAWANA (IMP UK) over the bitch No 42:  CH HIGHLAWN TABITHA OF MATABOLA.  I felt that the dog had a superior presence to the bitch with both moving on a par.  An outstanding virtue of one was met by one from the other and finally on overall conformation I believe the dog was better than the bitch.
