SOUTH
AFRICAN BULL TERRIER CLUB
41st Annual Championship Show - 2006
12 May 2007
JUDGE
- MR ANDRE STRYDOM (Sunduza Bull Terriers)
Another honour of extreme quality has been bestowed on me by the SABTC Committee, including its previous chairman, by inviting me to judge this most prestigious of Bull Terrier shows apart from the Annual
Major Trophy Show. For this I thank the Committee, Club and all concerned especially those exhibitors who entered and showed under me, not fearing my extremely high standard and expectations when judging this very special breed I have been involved with for over 62 of my 67 years. I note that in the Chairman's Message he called me "an icon in and very active servant of Bull Terriers". I thank him for this, but I am not so sure about the icon part, although the rest is perfectly true.
I think it is well-known that I detest writing judging reports on individual dogs, because it is my arguable opinion that this is a largely meaningless exercise except for the person whose dog is being reported on. But on the other hand such a report can have exceptional value if it contains a general analysis of the judge's opinion on the status of the breed for what it is worth, based on his experience and knowledge inside the show ring as well as developments in our breeding kennels. This I will attempt to do, not only for the owners and breeders of the 29 Bull Terriers shown under me out of the 36 entered, but for all who genuinely want to know where I think we stand at present.
I was very pleasantly surprised by the general standard and quality of the dogs and bitches I judged. I firmly believe I can safely say that it was the best line-up of Bull Terriers I have ever judged in my long judging career since my first championship show judged in 1977 - 30 years ago. My previous best line-up of Bull Terriers was the Major Trophy Show of 2000, when Ch Booksale Harry Hotspur won the Supreme title and his litter sister, Ch Booksale Hermia of Sandawana, became Bitch of the Year. Without being unrealistic or in any way vindictive (because both were superb examples of our breed - so much so that I used Harry Hotspur at stud to my best bitch when Doulina and I restarted breeding after almost 15 years in virtual retirement) I believe I can safely say that both would have been beaten by both my Best of Breed and Reserve Best of Breed. Furthermore the general quality of those I had the great pleasure of judging was a cut above the general quality of the qualified competitors in the 2000 Major Trophy Show. Several other quality dogs and bitches were not entered under me at this show, but I doubt that they would have made any difference to the outcome, except for one I dearly would have liked to compare with the winners. She is Ch Dajamani Valnico of Bellators ROM, our Supreme Bull Terrier of 2005, who unfortunately had not yet fully regained her shape after her first litter and was not shown in any of the four shows over the new Bull Terrier weekend that promises to become a great new feature on our annual show calendar. I recently saw her at shows and she is back on top and in her prime.
Although my patriotic heart yearned to put our locally bred Bull Terriers over the imports, it wasn't possible this time, but I trust and hope the imports will make the marked contribution towards improving our local stock that we so badly need to bring us up to current world standards.
From my report you will see that teeth, toplines and colours were not much of a problem at this show, but subsequent shows have confirmed my suspicions that many animals carrying these weaknesses were not shown under me. Thank you for not subjecting me to judging a significant number of dogs with these problems, but subsequent shows have confirmed that we are far from being out of the woods as far as these problems are concerned. In fact several shows have shown that our rings are infested with tricoloureds and black brindles, while beautifully marked, preferred red brindles with black noses are in extremely short supply.
But our worst fault at present, and my ring was rife with it, is weak hind-quarters resulting in poor, close hind movement. We must remember that a fighting dog with weak hind-quarters cannot win a fight against a rival that is sound behind, which enables him to drive with power into his opponent and floor him for the coup de grace. Okay, we don't fight our dogs, but they will always be a fighting breed, no matter how hard we try to breed that
trait out of them. And we should try at all times to retain that essential soundness that makes them for us, the finest breed of all.

Both almost 11 month old pups had slight canine faults, but were nevertheless good examples of the breed. |

- No 2 : COMBOLCIAS BLACK BRONCO
[Combolcias Thunder Storm ex Combolcias Unity's Flame]
This short bodied tri-colour has a good head with nice fill of muzzle and dark eyes, but is not the best of movers. |

2nd –
No 16
: ANWI WHITE PIRATE
[Wild Rose A Mere Madcap ex Anwi Queen of Night]
A day older than the winner, he also sported a good head but had the slightly longer body of the two, and I did not fully trust his temperament. |

No 4 : ANIRO PRIME TIME
[Ch & Int Ch Lubjan Rock And Stone ex Aniro Claudi
O'Grady]
This powerful almost 18 month old red has a slight tooth fault, but moved quite well in spite of his slightly long body and less than correct topline. A little overweight, but I judged him about the third best dog in my line-up for the CC. Although he is a better mover than both the CC and RCC winners, he isn't blessed with a head in their class. |

2nd -
No 5 : ALBELLO GRIFFON
[Ch Carradice Flying Bullet ex Albello Ruby Queen]
This 14 month old white is another substantial, short bodied fellow with a good bite and head, but not
a
good a mover as the winner. |

- No 6 : RHINESTONE READY TO RUMBA OF MALYCWA
[Ch Brum Home Of The Breed of Navada (Imp) ex Navada Rave Dancer of Rhinestone]
Just 19 months old, I wrote in my notes: "Excellent mover - best so far", little knowing at that stage that he would at the end win Best Mover
In Show. This white has a good front and plenty of substance. His good body and all-round goodness is topped off with a good head that could be a might longer. A champion in the making!

No 7 : NEXCON BOUNTY HUNTER
[Ch Nexcon White As Night at Nexwin ex Waaiplaas Lady Lulu at Nexcon]
Two days short of 2 years old, this white is rather light for his size and age, and not as good a mover as the winner. |

[Trick Or Treat Usher The Raven at Calub (Imp) ex Nexcon Lets
Go Girl]
This 2 years & 2 months old white is a fairly good dog with a
fair head that lacks a little more fill of muzzle. He has a
compact, short body with a level topline. Other virtues are
his strong, round bone, good front and strong hind-quarters. |

This was the kind of class I'd been hoping for all along. Of the five entered, four were present. |

- No 11 : BULLYVIEW LEADING ROLE TO NAVADA [Imp]
[Bellsbully Bonafide at Bullyview ex Ch (UK) Kearby's Bethsheba at
Bullyview]
A wonderfully positive, masculine 2 years and 5 months old brindle with more than enough of everything needed for a winner. He has a long, strong and deep head with a correct bite, but could have a slightly broader muzzle and be a bit more finely chiseled in the cheeks. His ears are strong and he has a long, strong, tapering neck. His nose is not entirely black, but his eyes are dark and he is a nicely marked brindle with plenty of red and without any unsightly white body splashes that are so common these days, but cannot be penalized due, in my opinion, to a weakness in our breed standard. He has a good, very deep, but shapely body, and could do with an extra kilogram or two. He is upstanding and tall, but has such a lovely, deep brisket that it gives the illusion of him being low in front, which is very far from the truth. He has a broad,
gun barrel front and round bone and moves true and parallel in front, striding out well, but is inclined to paddle because his drive behind is a little narrow and not powerful enough to impel him far enough forward.

- No 8 : CARRADICE FREE SPIRIT
[Ch Carradice Flying Bullet ex Carradice Lavender Mist of Neol]
Another outstanding white, 21 months old specimen with a tricoloured head patch, which is not a fault but I do not prefer at this point in time, with rings (not mine) often almost overrun by tricoloureds and black brindles. He has a remarkably curved and filled head with a perfect bite, although not quite as long as the winner's, but in proportion to his short, well-balanced body with good substance. He is not as well bent in stifle as the winner and not as straight in front and therefore is not quite the mover coming and going that the winner is, although both are a little far from perfect. I could have swapped these two dogs around without feeling the least doubtful about it, but chose the brindle because South Africa lacks a really
top class brindle at this point in time, while there are plenty of classy whites. Now, at last we have a positive brindle that could do something for us with his very good pedigree.

No 10 : ROSTEL KODA OF BILMARO
[Ch Dajan Skies The Limit of Sandawana (Imp) ex Rostel Roza]
A 3 years & 1 month old fairly good black brindle but he was too light compared to the three ahead of him. |

CHAMPIONS

Two excellent, worthy white champions, like peas in a pod. I could have put any one of them first without feeling any guilt. Both moved well coming, but had the same fault as most of the dogs going away by not moving parallel and too close behind. |

- No 14 : CH BUKAVI TITAN
[Ch Bukavi Big Billy ex Alchasun Spanish Echo of Jococla]
Although he has an adequate topline, it is not as straight as his half-brother's that stood second. But he has a perfect bite, whereas his second placed brother has an instanding left canine. |

No 15 : CH BUKAVI DIESEL 'N DUST
[Ch Bukavi Big Billy ex Ch. Idwala Radiant Ruby of Bukavi]
This 19 month old has a stunning topline, and could easily have won if it were not for his canine problem. He has a very slightly nicked left ear tip which I did not penalize because his ears are as on top of his head as his brother's. |

No 17 : JOCOCLA MONA LIZA
[ Ch Bukavi Big Billy ex Alchasun Spanish Echo of Jococla]
Another good headed 6½ month old white bitch, but both canines slightly instanding. She was a better mover than the winner, but her canines let her down. |

No 16 : GALACTICA KERRIE
[Ch Navada Eye Bandit ex Navada Devious Or Not of Galactica]
A 7½ month old black brindle, which I thought was the only rather untypical Bull Terrier in the show. She was very shelly and overshot with inboard canines. |

- No 23 : RHINESTONE RUMOUR HAS IT OF MALYCWA
[Ch (Eng) Penbray Play to the Devil ex Ch Rhinestone Real Candy Girl]
One of the stars of the show, this striking, super headed 11½ month old white has a remarkable ring presence and shows and moves with a perfect topline. If I have to fault her, her nose is not entirely black, and she could have quite a lot more bone and tighter front feet. I hope her spring of rib and substance improves with maturity to match her
top class head. RESERVE CHALLENGE CERTIFICATE & BEST PUPPY IN SHOW |

No 27 : STELRON BURNING AMBITION
[Ch Stelron Ride the Riddle ex Stelron Good Vibrations]
Another champion in the making, this 15 month old red was, to me, the third best bitch in the show. She has a beautiful head with just one misplaced tooth in the left upper jaw. She has a powerful, sound body and is a fair mover. |

No 24 : LUSAHN SUNSET LADY
[Lusahn Top Secret Gent ex Grisse Basse Ice Floe (Imp)]
Another excellent 15 month old that should have no trouble gaining her ticket. She is a well made white with a good, nicely filled head, but not as long as the winner's. She hasn't the front of the winner, resulting in her movement not being in the same class. |

[Ch & Int Ch Lujan Rock and Stone ex Ch Joche Alicia]
Good moving, substantial almost 19 month old white with a tricoloured eye patch. She has good, strong quarters. She has a fair head that could have been a little longer. This would have given her a perfect scissors bite, which is instead just on the right side of level. |

No 34 : NEXCON RUSTY NAIL
[Nexcon Son Of A Gun ex Glitter Girl at Nexcon]
The only competitor in this class was a nice headed 14 month old red, whose unsightly white body splash slightly spoils her pleasing lines. She has an instanding left lower canine. Nevertheless, good handling by Fransien van Heerden enhanced her adequate movement in both directions. |

No 30 : CH (UK) DAJAN CLASS ACT AT GAMEPOINT OF SANDAWANA
[Imp]
[Ch (UK) Kilacabar Fire Starter ex Ch (UK) Dajan Classy Dame]
What a bitch!! If this 4 year old white was still as youthful as she was when I saw her win the 2004 Regent Trophy 2
¼ years ago, she would have walked BIS with room to spare, but alas, time has started telling and she only slightly lacked the luster of the Best in Show dog. She sported the most magnificent strong, curved, deep and well filled head among a whole plethora of classy heads in the show. I recognized the overall quality of her head by awarding her Best Head
In Show. She has a correct scissors bite, in spite of a slightly crowded lower jaw, and an eye that could be meaner. She has a short body, with the correct, well-sprung, heart shaped rib cage and her substantial body hangs perfectly between her fore and hind legs. She has a broad front and stands square on her front feet. She could have a better bent stifle, which would enhance her hind movement to match her fair front movement. When considering Best in Show I went for the more youthful brindle CC dog with just the virtues we need right now in stud dogs in Southern Africa. Obviously the BIS Puppy and RCC winning bitch could not nearly compete with this more mature, more substantial and much heavier boned lady of the show. I am glad I had the honour of awarding her with the CC that made her a champion!!
